Schools

Geneseo is supported by Geneseo Community Unit School District 228 (GCUSD). Our educators have high expectations for academic achievement.

Geographically, the GCUSD is one of the largest school districts in the State of Illinois. The District draws not only from the town itself, but also from many outlying residential developments and farms located in the area. The district serves approximately 3,000 students, with approximately 925 at the high school level.

The Geneseo school system provides excellent academic opportunities, starting with the preschool Ladders to Learning Program and continuing through high school Advanced Placement classes.

The Geneseo District is comprised of four elementary schools, a middle school (6th, 7th and 8th grades), and a high school. There is also a private school, St. Malachy’s Catholic School, which offers Kindergarten – 6th grade. The Geneseo School District provides a wide range of extracurricular activities for its students. The high school offers football, basketball, track/cross country, wrestling, pom pon, cheerleading, tennis, golf, baseball, softball, volleyball and soccer. Many of these same activities are available at the middle school.

Students can participate in band and choir with several concerts scheduled throughout the year. The marching band performs at school athletic events and competes in contests throughout the state. The high school and middle school provide over 20 other clubs and activities, such as newspaper, yearbook, F.F.A., Student Council, Coop Club, and National Honor Society.

Many athletic programs are available in Geneseo for grade school children including “Little League” football, baseball, basketball, softball, wrestling and soccer.

Breakfast and hot lunch programs are available for students at all schools. Free bus transportation is provided to students living in surrounding residential areas. Geneseo is affiliated with the Henry – Stark Special Education District, which provides for students with special educational needs.

EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION

Geneseo schools provide many opportunities for academic achievement. At the High School, students can select from over 125 class offerings. The overall performance score for the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) for our district in 2006-2007 was 90.2 compared to the state average of 78.7.

Annually, the proportion of Illinois State Scholars from Geneseo significantly exceeds the State average. Geneseo students at all levels in the district scored well above the State of Illinois average on State tests in mathematics, writing, and reading.

Geneseo Community Unit School District has a proud tradition of success for children. Whether it is the achievement of excellent ACT scores, the award winning band, choir, speech, or athletic teams, Geneseo’s pride is reflected in the Geneseo Schools.
